Event: Krewe du Vieux

It's official--Mardi Gras season has begun. All over New Orleans, the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold can be seen, and people start to hang beads from their balconies and eat King Cake. Though the actual start date this year was January 6th, the first major parade of Mardi Gras rolls on January 27th. After this, parades will come frequently. They kind of take over the city until Mardi Gras day (February 13th).

Krewe du Vieux kicks it all off. It does not have the large, two-story floats of the later parades, but makes up for its smaller size with humor, particularly political humor. Last year, riding off of the presidential election, many floats satirized Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. In addition to political satire, Krewe du Vieux is know for being rather erotic. By this, I mean, more than R-rated. I once saw a group of marchers wearing loin cloths, and only loin cloths.

So, in short, Krewe du Vieux is not for someone who might be easily offended. It's crude, unique from any other parade (and probably anything else you will ever witness) and actually hilarious.

Have you been to Krewe du Vieux and are you a fan? If you plan to be there tomorrow, post pictures (no X-rated pictures of course!)

Update from Krewe du Vieux 2018
The theme this year was two-fold. First, New Orleans is celebrating its 300th birthday this year, so there was a lot of old-fashioned French costumes among  the marchers. But yet, it wouldn't be Krewe du Vieux without some political satire. With broken water pumps that caused flooding last summer, the Sewage and Water Board became the butt of many jokes.
