New Orleans-ism: The Sidewalks

Suppose you're walking down the sidewalk and suddenly you're not sure if you're still in the city, or a canyon. What has caused this confusion? Why, it's the sidewalks of New Orleans themselves which are slightly confused.

They create mountains over tree roots, crack and split to create craters. The largest ones are marked off by cones or tape. Others look like an angry child-giant got a hold of a sledgehammer and smashed the sidewalk into pieces. It's walkable, just with careful trending.

All in all, I guess they add some character to otherwise ordinary sidewalks. Just watch where you're going, and avoid wearing high heals!

Do you have any sidewalk stories?

  1. I was in NOLA with my family last week, the second day of a week's vacation...sidewalk damaged so badly, all over the French Quarter...11:30 AM, a tile on side of damaged area cracked (I am 5'8" and 139 lb)..it broke. I fell backwards into Royal street and broke my wrist narrowly being missed by a passing car. Went to Urgent Care and was told all the UC in and around the French Quarter see 4-5 people A WEEK! due to the horrible conditions of their sidewalks in the French Quarter. GET IT TOGETHER NOLA and select a Mayor who will fix this.
