Event: Brass and Glass at YAYA

YAYA is an art studio that aims to teach young people various art skills, including those in ceramics, glass blowing and with mixed media. On Friday, they had a fundraiser event with their handmade items for sale, including blown glass cups that if you purchased, you could drink for free all night. Great fundraiser idea! I bought this pretty blue glass.

In addition to having items for sale, they had a glass blowing demonstration. For close to an hour, I watched three people mold glass into the shape of a violin, using fire, metal tools and their own breath. It was an inspiring process to watch. They had a mental picture, and at one point sketched it on the floor in chalk. Glass is an interesting medium to use to create art. When it is hot enough, it is bendable and able to be shaped, and yet it cools very quickly into a substance that shatters on contact.

In the courtyard of the building, the Treme Brass Band played. They also had food from Café Reconcile, though nothing vegetarian. Such is life in the South.

Overall, it was a great evening and supports a creative organization that is teaching and inspiring teenagers and young people to create their own art.
