Exploration: Hi-ho Lounge

Location: 2239 St. Claude Avenue (Marigny)

My first impression coming into the Hi-Ho Lounge was that it's dark. It's narrow, painted red with window coverings. The door was open, allowing the cool evening breeze to come in, which, in a city of air conditioning, I appreciated. Low, dim lights hung from the ceiling over mismatched tables and the bar. It looked like a fun, dive-type venue, but my favorite part was the stage upfront.

There was a band setting up, which made me happy. When I first moved to New Orleans, I knew that in a city that is so in love with music, places like this--small venues in locally owned bars where local bands perform--had to exist, but I did not know where. I'm glad to have found a few! There were three bands (technically two bands and a soloist) playing when I went. Looking at the Hi-Ho Lounge's schedule, this seems typical.

To drink, I had a Radler, and Gieselle tried a red wine first (which she didn't like), Yeungling (old standby) and then a Guinness. I later learned there's a pop-up café in the courtyard, but I didn't try it out when I was there.

I give the Hi-Ho Lounge top ratings for atmosphere, music and decent prices. I only wish it was closer to my neighborhood!
