Witch Café
Name: Tea Witch Café
Location: 1381 Magazine Street
Classification: Tea Café
One of my new favorite spots in the Lower Garden District is
called Tea Witch Café. I discovered it accidently while wondering around during
my summer break. In a city filled with bars and coffee shops, I was intrigued
by the concept of a place devoted to tea.
Upon entering, you come into a small room with a grey purple
floor, purple paneled walls, and a grey blue bar. It’s small, just space enough
for four small round tables, the bar up front and another by the window with
tall chairs. Both bars are carved from wood from the same tree, a curly maple,
enveloping the space with its warmth. The ceiling—the same purple paneling—has
a full moon painted in the center.
The physical space is warm and comforting, a quiet
hide-away, but the real beauty of Tea Witch Café comes from the owner, who
prepares and brews her own teas with reverence. She often “prescribes” teas to
customers based on how they are feeling at that moment, and brews it right
then. Iced teas are always available.
(Additionally, there’s coffee for the non-tea drinkers, sparkling water,
vegan pastries, organic chocolate and some snacks.)
On my first visit, I had an iced tea called Coco Loco, a green
tea blended with chocolate, cardamom and toasted coconut. It was tasty and
refreshing, easily toping my list of favorite teas. Since then, I’ve returned
several times, sampling different teas each time.
