Exploration: The Kerry Irish Pub
Exploration: Kerry Irish Pub
Location: 331 Decatur Street (French Quarter)
When we were deciding where to explore this week, Giselle and I first decided on a category--an Irish pub. A Google search of "Irish pubs in New Orleans" pulled up a few, including The Kerry Irish Pub, located in the French Quarter. The pictures looked fun and there was live music, which is always a plus in my opinion.
We found Blue Bikes along the way and rode into the Quarter. When we entered the pub, the first thing I noticed was the hundreds--maybe thousands--of dollar bills pinned to the pillars and ceiling above the bar. Behind the bar, directly across from where we sat, were dozens of police and fire fighter badges. I wondered how they got there. Did men and woman who served in those positions donate them on-site or mail them to the pub when they returned home? Mysteries.
The physical space of the pub was typical for the Quarter. It was small and narrow, with the bar as soon as you came in, a few tables and chairs against the wall opposite to the bar and a few by the stage. On stage, a duo were playing something country-folk music. It was a pleasant place with nice music. I could imagine this space has been a pub--even if not Kerry Irish Pub--for a long time. Since New Orleans was settled, sailors coming up the River have looked to the French Quarter for something to drink.
All in all, I liked this pub. The Quarter can be fun once in awhile (despite that it is loud, smelly, usually over-priced and full of tourists). I had an Irish Cider and Giselle had an Abita Amber. They were $6 each, so quite reasonably priced. Would I go back here? Probably, if I was in the Quarter and wanted a chill place with some good music.
